Averil
Coxhead teaches English for Academic Purposes in the School of
Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of
Wellington, New Zealand. She is responsible for materials development
and publications for the English Proficiency Programme. She also liases
between the programme and the rest of Victoria University.
Her main professional areas of
interest are vocabulary learning, teaching and development. She is
the author of the Academic Word List (AWL), a corpus-based list of
academic vocabulary. For the AWL, links to sites which use the list,
hints on learning using the list, and information on its
development, see www.vuw.ac.nz/lals/div1/awl/.
For further information and discussion on the development and
evaluation of the AWL, see TESOL Quarterly, Vol. 34, No. 2 (Summer
2000).
While vocabulary is Averils
number one area of interest, she is keen on learning more about how
to further develop language skills in preparation for academic
studies.
Outside the classroom and the
university, she follows cricket, field hockey and rugby and one day
she might succeed in playing a round of golf without losing the
ball. Yeah, right. |
