Adviser

For the last ten years I’ve worked at the ELT Centre at the University of St Andrews (www.st-and.ac.uk/services/elt), where a large part of what I do is directing and teaching on foundation courses for international students – in particular from Asia – who are going to do their undergraduate degrees at UK universities. Naturally, good dictionaries matter to me and my students.

Before I came to this small medieval town on the east coast of Scotland, I had lived and worked in Greece, Italy and China, as well as London and Edinburgh. I think travelling has always been my favourite thing and I love my present job because I meet people from all over the world.

Apart from work, I’m into photography, although I keep promising myself I’m going to get round to cataloguing and organising the huge collection of photographs which live in shoeboxes under my bed! I like going out walking – as long as it’s not too hilly – even though Scotland in the winter can be a bit chilly. On the other hand, the changing weather makes for brilliant skyscapes. I’ve always liked cooking (making a virtue of a necessity?) and collect cookery books and recipes from every country I visit. I also have about half a hectare of garden where I grow a lot of flowers, fruit and vegetables and keep hens. All of those things, plus a husband, three kids and three cats keep me pretty busy.
