For the last ten years Ive worked
at the ELT Centre at the University of St Andrews (www.st-and.ac.uk/services/elt),
where a large part of what I do is directing and teaching on
foundation courses for international students in particular from
Asia who are going to do their undergraduate degrees at UK
universities. Naturally, good dictionaries matter to me and my
students.
Before I came to this small
medieval town on the east coast of Scotland, I had lived and worked
in Greece, Italy and China, as well as London and Edinburgh. I think
travelling has always been my favourite thing and I love my present
job because I meet people from all over the world.
Apart from work, Im into
photography, although I keep promising myself Im going to get
round to cataloguing and organising the huge collection of
photographs which live in shoeboxes under my bed! I like going out
walking as long as its not too hilly even though Scotland
in the winter can be a bit chilly. On the other hand, the changing
weather makes for brilliant skyscapes. Ive always liked cooking
(making a virtue of a necessity?) and collect cookery books and
recipes from every country I visit. I also have about half a hectare
of garden where I grow a lot of flowers, fruit and vegetables and
keep hens. All of those things, plus a husband, three kids and three
cats keep me pretty busy. |
