Dr Hilary Nesi
Adviser
Hello, my name’s Hilary Nesi. I’m on the Advisory Panel for the Macmillan English Dictionary, School Dictionary, Essential Dictionary and Phrasal Verbs Plus. I’m particularly interested in studying the way language is used in colleges and universities. There are lots of different aspects to this topic – I study the way learners of English use dictionaries, the way university staff and students use English to write and speak, and the impact of technology (such as email and the World Wide Web) on academic language use.
I work in the Centre for English Language Teacher Education (CELTE) at Warwick University, and I teach on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and supervise research students. When I am at work I am very, very untidy – visitors to my office usually can’t find a place to sit down because there are books and papers everywhere. I don’t usually put things away because if I do I can’t find them again! Every summer I promise myself that I will tidy my office, but I never do because I am always too busy with other more interesting things.
When I’m at home I am not like that at all – I actually like doing the housework, although I must say I prefer cooking (and eating) to cleaning up afterwards. I like being with my family, and friends, and pets, and I like to read and go to the cinema and the theatre. I also go to the gym for keep fit classes, but I always stay at the very back of the class where the instructor can’t see me, in case I make a mistake. I think my students would be surprised if they knew this, because at work I am usually at the front of the class!
