Dr Joanna Channell

Dr Joanna Channell is a specialist in the analysis of workplace and professional language and communication. Following doctoral studies at the University of York, she held academic posts at Nottingham, De Montfort and Birmingham universities before setting up a language and communication consultancy business in 1993 providing research and training to businesses, government departments, local authorities, hospitals and universities.
Joanna has been involved in many materials development and dictionary projects. She is joint author of The Words You Need and More Words you Need (Macmillan, 1980 and 1985), and was involved with the Collins COBUILD development team for many years, specialising in the presentation of pragmatic information in their dictionaries. She is the author of Vague Language (Oxford University Press, 1994). Her recent publications include contributions to Corpus Linguistics: Critical Concepts in Linguistics (Eds. W. Teubert and R. Krishnamurthy, Routledge, 2007) and The Postgraduate’s Companion (Eds. G. Hall and J. Longman, Sage, 2008).
