Solid dictionary skills are a crucial element of successful English-language learning, and these dictionary e-lessons are designed to help you pass on these skills to your students. In each e-lesson we offer full teaching notes and photocopiable worksheets on key elements of dictionaries, ranging from simple tasks like using guide words, to more detailed discussion about metaphor, idioms and phrases.

  • Get it right! (Part 2)

    Certain topics always present difficulties for learners of English – things like register, word patterns and prepositions. This e-lesson completes a two-part look at the ‘Get it right’ boxes in the Macmillan English Dictionary which help students anticipate and correct mistakes in these and other areas. In the lesson, you will look at problems associated with register, countability / uncountability, and frequently confused words, asking students to consider sample sentences, identify the mistakes and correct them.

  • Maritime idioms

    If your students have ever wondered about the origins of phrases like ‘miss the boat’ and ‘on an even keel’ and asked how to use them properly, this e-lesson will come in very handy. It looks at the many English idioms connected with ships and the sea.
