Sample e-lesson: collocations.

The resources you will find on this page are examples of the kind of materials that will be available on the new Macmillan Dictionary resource site from April.

MED e-lessons are free downloadable dictionary activities for use in the classroom or for private study. Each e-lesson comes complete with full teacher's notes.
This sample material addresses the concept of using collocations, and is suitable for Advanced Learners.

Collocations - words have friends too!

When learning words it is helpful to notice and to learn some of the words that they often occur with (their collocations). This helps learners to manipulate 'chunks' of language, and to work with greater fluency. The new edition of the Macmillan English Dictionary contains 506 special collocation boxes in addition to the essential collocates that are shown in the body of the dictionary entry. This example uses the word 'join':

This activity focuses on this great feature, and aims to help students to make use of the ways in which the Macmillan English Dictionary (MED) gives information on collocations. Please allow your students 4 minutes each for Activities 1-3, and up to 10 minutes for Activity 4.

MED e-lessons are part of the suite that won the British Council Innovation Awards in March 2004. For more information about the award, click here.
