Macmillan English Dictionary - Second Edition
Spotlight Magazine - July / August edition, 2007.
With a wide range of new material, the second edition of the Macmillan English Dictionary has managed to develop further the innovative features that have already won it two prestigious awards. Designed to help learners understand, use and become more aware of the English language, there are hundreds of new words among the 7,500 included in the dictionary. The vocabulary includes clearly labelled subject-specific vocabulary and many more collocations, synonyms and antonyms, and the Expand your Vocabulary section helps you to choose the right word to use at the right time. The dictionary not only helps you to understand the meaning of words but also how to become a better learner by offering an insight into how the English language works. Also, after analysing learners’ writing, Macmillan, in collaboration with the Centre for English Corpus Linguistics at the Université catholique de Louvain, has created materials to help learners become better and more confident writers in both academic and professional situations. The Improve your Writing Skills section gives advice on writing in areas that often cause difficulties, while Get it right boxes help learners recognise common mistakes and show you how to correct them. These boxes often highlight common collocations, give alternatives to over-used words and explain those easily confused. The CD-ROM also has even more to offer. As well as the new thesaurus and interactive exercises to help writing skills, you can now connect to selected websites offering both cultural and encyclopaedic information. You can now choose how much information about each word you want displayed as well as being able to add your own notes to the dictionary entries. Info:www.macmillandictionaries.com.
